In 1872 Graser was the first to investigate the submerged parts of
the Zea ship-sheds. In three days, working in ankle-deep water, he
surveyed remains of 41 presumed ship-sheds in Zea and nine in Mounychia
(the smallest naval harbour in the Piraeus).
He reported that the slipways continue underwater ‘as far as
the eye can see’. Later research has been skeptical about his
investigation, but seen in the light of the recent underwater investigations
of Zea Harbour, it is very likely that he did find many ship-sheds
in Mounychia and Zea.
