2006 has been particular successful for the following reasons: three building phases were identified in the Area 1 Zea shipsheds (in all probability dating from the 5th through the 4th centuries BC); further, Mette K. Schaldemose’s research on the roof construction has shown that either, or both, the Phase II and III shipshed were covered with Corinthian tiles.
In addition, the submerged foundations of what appears to be a round tower at the eastern entrance to Zea were
found, and two building phases were identified in the foundations of the fortification wall, which continued
northwards, along the eastern part of the harbour mouth to the fortified harbour entrance defending the naval base towards the sea.
Finally, we re-discovered the southern part of the fortified quay (limen kleistos) in Mikrolimano (ancient Mounychia), including the middle tower (M-T3) and the possible foundations of the southern tower (M-T2) guarding the harbour entrance.
